Born
in 1938 in Zimbabwe and educated in Zimbabwe and England. By profession he was
an electrical engineer. His interest in art began at an early age but only started
to develop into a more serious hobby in 1980. His work environment enabled him
extensive travel and study of the Zimbabwean landscape and its abundant wildlife.
In his travels he developed a fascination with wildlife and nature and this
he captured in water colour and pencil sketches. He is mainly a self-taught
artist but learnt the rudiments of acrylic and oil painting when he attended
classes given by Peter Birch ARCA (London). Following the public interest shown
in my wildlife and landscape paintings he made the decision to retire and devote
more time to his art work. Roy has been commissioned on numerous occasions and
now has paintings in South Africa, USA, Canada, Australia and UK and Zimbabwe.
The Wild Life Society of Zimbabwe selected one of his elephant paintings for
their 1985 Christmas card. He moved to South Africa in 2007, and he continues
to enjoy and record his experiences in a new and interesting environment. His
realistic landscape paintings in oils, acrylics and water colour reflect his
lifelong enjoyment and observation of nature. Roy stokes says: "I enjoy
depicting seemingly derelict buildings and reflects a bygone era of the shacks
and cottages that have been built with limited resources and ingenuity".
