The Prime attraction of Butterflies for Africa is the impressive walk through butterfly house where visitors are able to come into close contact with butterflies from around the world as they fly freely in an attractive, lush environment. It provides the perfect home for both international and indigenous butterflies and has already become a prime tourist attraction for the region, while serving as a valuable educational tool and vital conservation asset. Guides are available at all times to assist you at no extra charge.
A walk through the tropical Butterfly House takes one into a fantasyland - where beautiful butterflies from across the world fly freely in a spectacular display of colour.
It needs to be experienced first hand but journalist Janet van Eeden-Harrison, writing for The Natal Witness describes the Butterfly House as: "an explosion of colour, in an impressionist painting with sound effects. Hot water cascades in a waterfall next to me, steam rises and the colours flutter, flutter, flutter. All around me butterflies dance through the spray in the tropical heat. Some, like dancers, bow low and display their gossamer delights to their best advantage on a step, a plant, a bench . . . Sitting in the Butterfly House, listening to the water cascading, I feel certain that this is one place in which the beauty of the world can be appreciated" .
We have made a number of alterations to our walk-through butterfly house to make the facility wheelchair accessible. In the past only the lower sections of the butterfly house could accommodate visitors in wheelchairs but this has changed with the construction of a new bridge near the main waterfall. Paths have also been widened for this purpose. The new bridge takes visitors over the stream, which runs through the house, directly into the main flight path of the butterflies. It's a great opportunity to stand next to the cascading waterfall in the midst of dancing butterflies.
Because most of our butterflies and other creatures come from warm tropical regions the butterfly enclosure is warm and humid especially on hot days. We do have fans operating in summer and you're welcome to use your tickets to enter the butterfly house as many times as you like on the day of purchase.
