Q: What will we see and do during our visit?
A: The visit starts with an Audio-visual show on butterflies (an animated show
is available for younger children). Then the group proceeds to the display room
before joining our guides for a tour of the butterfly house. Thereafter groups
may have lunch in the butterfly garden, shop in the craft shop and visit the
art gallery (older children only).
Q: What is the Butterfly House?
A: This is a large walk through aviary where the butterflies fly freely amongst
visitors. It is a lush jungle
type environment with waterfalls, orchids, fish ponds, birds and an iguana display.
This has been
favourably compared with the best facilities of its kind worldwide.
Q: What types of butterflies will we see?
A: We keep a range of the most spectacular and unusual butterflies from Africa,
Central America and Asia. As the butterflies have a life span of less than a
month the butterfly species in the house are constantly changing.
Q: When is the best time to visit?
A: Butterflies fly better on warm days but we do have artificial heating which
keeps them flying throughout the year. Mornings are the best time to see the
butterflies. In winter they generally stop flying by mid-afternoon.
Q: What if it's raining?
A: The butterfly enclosure if fully enclosed and we have an indoor venue for
you to use for tea or lunch breaks or teaching activities.
Q: How much time do we need?
A: We recommend a minimum of an hour and 15 min. The tour of the butterfly house
takes about 30min, audio-visual show 25min & display room 10min. We do also
recommend setting time aside to visit the craft shop, art gallery, butterfly
garden etc. You may also want to spend time viewing and relaxing in the butterfly
house after the tour.
Q: What size groups can you handle?
A: We have catered for school groups of up to 200, but for a more personalized
tour we recommend groups of around 30. Larger groups are split up into more
manageable sizes.
Q: Do you sell food?
A: We sell party packs which include a drink, bread roll with a choice of fillings
and a variety of sweets and chips (or more healthy options if you prefer)–
please book these. We do also have a coffee shop but this is not really suitable
for large school groups.
Q: What if the children at my school can’t afford the admission
fee?
A: As we don’t want to exclude any schools or children, we do offer reduced
rates to those schools who genuinely can’t afford the entrance fee or
complimentary admission to children when schools cannot afford to subsidise
them. Please contact us in this regard before making your booking.
Q: Tell me more about the Monkey House
A: Our monkey enclosure currently houses two cotton top tamarins. For an additional
fee pupils can be given 15 minute tours in the enclosure. Note we cannot take
more than 10 children at a time.
Q: How much is it?
A: R19 per pupil. 1 Teacher per every 10 pupils will be admitted free of charge.
Q: How do I book a school visit?
A: Give us a call on 033-3871356 and we’ll gladly make a booking for your
group. Alternatively you can email us at info@butterflies.co.za.
